Font 2070 — Back in 2007, İyi Printing House asked a bunch of graphic designers and photographers -including myself- to submit works for their yearly Diary: The subject of the project, it was about the consequences of melting glaciers that regulate our planet's climate. This was a situation predominantly accelerated by human activities.

A significant threat indeed! Especially for human specie who misconstrue Earth’s entire history as a narrative concerning only themselves. I started thinking about how humans had basically proven themselves incapable of co-existence, how quickly they reverted to brutality and violence when they had enough power over others, how nonchalant and vulgar they were in their mistreatment of Nature. 

So it was for that occasion that I designed this font. The formation of this font was based on the hypothesis that the humankind and all its letters, the very codes of its expression, would eventually disappear, and that our world would continue to exist, as it did however many millions of years ago, without humans, without those “smart” species who are us. In that sense, we would be no more different than all kinds of other species which had long before entered and then exited this planet’s perpetual life.

İyi matbaa, 2007 yılı ajandası için, içlerinde benim de olduğum bazı grafik tasarımcı ve fotoğrafçılardan çalışmalar istemişti. Projenin konusu; gezegenimizin iklimini düzenleyen buzulların erimesinin sonuçları üzerineydi. Bu, ağırlıklı insan faaliyetleri nedeniyle hızlanan bir durum.

Tüm yeryüzü tarihini kendinden ibaret sanan insan türü için ciddi bir tehdit bu. İnsan denen türün ortak yaşamı becerememesi, gücü eline geçirdiğinde çevresine, doğaya karşı zalimleşmesi, terbiye etmeye çalışması gibi şeyler kafamda dönmeye başlamıştı.

Proje için tasarladığım bu font, insan türüyle birlikte, onun oluşturduğu anlamın kodları olan harflerin de silineceği varsayımıyla hazırlandı. Yani bu durumda dünyamız, insansız olarak bilmem kaç milyon yıl önce olduğu gibi, yine hayatına o “akıllı” canlısından mahrum olarak, insansız olarak devam edecek. Aynen daha önce de hayatına girip sonra da yok olan diğer türler gibi...
